De minimale door de markt toegestane dikte is 45 micron en de maximale dikte kan meer dan 300 micron bereiken. De kleur is donkerder, verbruikt meer zinkmetaal, vormt een infiltratielaag met het basismetaal en heeft een goede corrosieweerstand. Thermisch verzinken kan in buitenomgevingen tientallen jaren meegaan.
